Economic Development and Regional Integration in the Great lakes Region
 

OUR VISION:
This involves the transformation of the Region into an area of shared growth and development, an area of cooperation based on convergence of strategies and policies.

 

OUR COMMITMENT:

The 11 Heads of State and Government of Member countries of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, meeting in Dar Es-Salaam, on 19 and 20 November 2004, under the auspices of the United

Nations and the African Union signed the Pact on Security, Stability and Development in the Great Lakes Region on 15 December 2006 in Nairobi, Kenya, committed themselves to the respect of the following common constitutional principles:

  To jointly promote a properous, integrated economic space, to improve the standard of living of its populations, and to contribute to the development of the Region, by implementing the Program of Action for Economic Development and Regional Integration with the aim of:
     
  Promoting cooperation and economic integration by harmonizing and coordinating national and regional policies with relevant regional economic communities so as to improve stability and economic competitiveness, and to reduce poverty;
     
  Developing common infrastructure in the areas of energy, transport and communications;
     
  Promoting local regionalintegration by strenghening multi-sectoral cooperation and solidarity among the border populations of neighbouring States.
     

OUR CONTENT:

The Regional Action Program of the promotion of Economic Development and Regional Integration comprises three sub-programs and fifteen priority projects.
The sub-programs are the following:

 

Cooperation for poverty reduction

     
  Establishment of a Region Support Mechanism for Micro-Finance Institutions;
     
  Food Security Project; and
     
  Trans-Border Development Basins
     
 
 

 

2. Harmonization and strengthening of cooperation policies

  Revival of CEPGL and its specialized agencies; and
     
  Certification of natural resources.
     

3. Infrastructure Development

  Northern Corridor;
     
  Trans-African Highway (Mombassa-Lagos);
     
  Lobito Corridor project;
     
  Southern Corridor project;
     
  Pre-feasibility study of the Northern Corridor railway extension;
     
  Feasibility study on the rehabilitation and navigability of the River Congo basin;
     
  Rehabilitation and connectivity of the Inga Dam;
     
  Feasibility study on the regional oil pipeline;
     
  Methane gas project (Kivu regional pipeline project);
     
  East African Submarine Cable System (EASSy).
