Khartoum, Sudan 9th November, 2017: Regional Committee against illegal exploitation of natural resources of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) is holding its 16th meeting in Khartoum, Sudan from 7th - 10th November, 2017 to assess the implementation of the six tools on the Fight against the Illegal Exploitation of Natural Resources in the ICGLR Member States.

During the opening session, the guest of honour Hon. Oshiek Mohamed Ahmed Taher, State Minister for Minerals of the Republic of Sudan, underscored the importance of the meeting as a ground to pave ways for realizing the aspired cooperation in the collective Fight against Illegal Exploitation of Natural Resources in the Great Lakes Region. He called for necessary means for a better collaboration among the countries of the region in utilising these resources for the benefit of the people of the region and its preservation for the future generation.

On his part the ICGLR Executive Secretary Ambassador Zachary Muburi-Muita noted the progress made since the 15th Meeting of the Regional Committee, held from 25th to 27th July 2017 in Arusha, Tanzania and the outcome of the Summit of the ICGLR Heads of State and Government, held on 19th October 2017 in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo which urged Member States to make more concerted efforts to promote and invite more traceability and due diligence service providers for purposes of efficiency and cost reduction.

He said, the Summit directed all auditing firms operating in the minerals supply chain in the Great Lakes Region be accredited by the ICGLR Regional Audit Committee of the Regional Initiative on Natural Resources and adopted the recommendations of Ministers of Mines on the Self-Financing Mechanism of the Regional initiative on Natural Resources (RINR), which is a critical tool in the success of the Fight against Illegal Exploitation of Natural Resources in the Great Lakes Region;

The Mmeeting co-chaired by ICGLR Secretariat and GIZ involving financial and technical partners in the implementation of the Regional Initiative on Natural Resources (RINR) which includes GIZ, BGR, IMPACT, Tetra Tech, African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) preceded the meeting of the Regional Committee to develop a coordinated plan for the implementation of the RINR.

In the course of the meeting members of the Regional Committee will undergo capacity building training on recent trends of good governance in the mining sector, including the African Mining Vision (AMV).

ICGLR Member States includes the Republic of Angola, Republic of Burundi, Central African Republic, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Kenya, Republic of Rwanda, Republic of South Sudan, Republic of Sudan, United Republic of Tanzania, Republic of Uganda and the Republic of Zambia.
